Recently, when actress Neetu Chandra (of Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! fame) agreed to do a bold photo shoot for a men’s magazine, she hardly realised it would spark controversy and outrage from political affiliates.
Neetu, who had agreed to do hot and sexy cover for ‘The Man’ magazine, was shooting along with model Krishikha Gupta outside the lobby of a 3-star hotel, when a group of the hotel’s regular male customers watching it by the pool, suddenly started raising strong objections, by indiscriminately shouting at her and the magazine crew. But only when things spiralled into an ugly argument and the group started screaming “Jai Maharashtra” at the top of their lungs, did the magazine’s team and Neetu realise that things were out of their control.
Alleging that the shoot was promoting lesbianism, the group began getting aggressive and tried to physically harm the shooting crew. They claimed to have connections with Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and threatened an agitation. They even tried to confiscate the camera, resulting in the shoot having to be abruptly called off.
“Though the concept about two girls getting very intimate was a bit outrageous, we were doing it very aesthetically. But these men were a frustrated lot and couldn’t take the heat. They only saw nudity in our concept,” fires Neetu Chandra.
The actress explains, “First they tried to seek my attention with smiles and stares, so I acknowledged them. But as I went on with my work, the whole group of men suddenly started feeling ignored and began creating a scene. They did manage to scare me when they started to politicise the issue and scream communal slogans. That was when we had to stop the shoot.”
But now ‘The Man’ has decided to go ahead with the images they managed before the ruckus at the hotel began, raising speculation whether these sensational images will cause further problems when the magazine’s next issue hits the stands in a couple of days.

PARIS — French police say British actress Lucy Gordon, who appeared in “Spider-Man 3,” was found dead in her Paris apartment after apparently committing suicide.
An official with the Paris police headquarters says an autopsy has been ordered to determine the cause of death.
The official said today it appeared to be a suicide, but gave no details.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of police agency policy.
The 28-year-old Gordon appeared in a dozen films, including as reporter Jennifer Dugan in “Spider-Man 3.”
She portrays British singer and actress Jane Birkin in the upcoming biopic “Serge Gainsbourg (A Heroic Life)” by Joann Sfar.

Student Kris Allen has been named the surprise winner of the eighth season of American Idol.
The 23-year-old from Arkansas beat favourite Adam Lambert, 27, to the title in Wednesday's finale.
"I'm sorry, I don't even know what to feel right now. This is crazy," he said after hearing he had won.

MAGETAN, Indonesia (AFP) — An Indonesian military transport plane carrying soldiers and their families crashed into homes and erupted in flames, killing at least 97 people, the air force spokesman said.
Television footage showed the burning wreckage of the Hercules scattered in rice paddies in Magetan, East Java, about 160 kilometres (100 miles) east of Yogyakarta.
"The death toll is now 97 people and 15 injured," spokesman Bambang Sulistio told AFP.
The plane was carrying 98 passengers including soldiers and their families, among them 10 children, on a flight to the eastern province of Papua, military spokesman Sagom Tamboen said earlier.
Witnesses said it smashed into houses before erupting in a ball of flame and rolling into a paddy field.
"The plane hit some houses, bounced, hit the ground and then caught fire," one witness told Metro TV.
The plane's massive tail section could be seen resting upside down and badly damaged in the green rice field, but the rest of the fuselage had burned down to its metal frame.
Burning wreckage was scattered over a large area and soldiers were helping pull bodies from the wreckage and the thick mud of the paddy.
The crash occurred as the plane was preparing to land at nearby Iswahyudi military airbase on its way to Papua, but officials said the cause of the accident was unknown.
"The engines were good, the weather was good. Was it human error? We can't confirm that yet," Tamboen said.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono summoned military chief Djoko Santoso and Defence Minister Juwono Sudarsono to a meeting at the state palace in Jakarta to discuss the accident.
Sudarsono said the cause of the crash was being investigated.
But he complained that the military's budget was insufficient to ensure aircraft received minimum maintenance.
"Ideally, the maintenance cost should be 20 to 25 percent of the overall military budget but at present it's below 10 percent," he told reporters.
He said he would ground all of the country's Hercules aircraft if the crash is found to have been the result of technical or mechanical failure.
It is the second accident involving an Indonesian Air Force Hercules in two weeks, after one overshot the runway of Wamena airport in Papua on May 10. One person was reportedly injured in that incident.
In response to the Wamena accident, the air force said it would check its ageing Hercules fleet which is being upgraded with airframe and engine capability improvements.
Early last month, 24 military personnel died when their Fokker 27 training aircraft careered into a hangar and burst into flames at an air base in West Java.
Indonesia is the world's largest archipelagic nation and relies heavily on air travel, but accidents are common and its commercial airlines are banned from flying in European Union airspace

Prabhakaran's body found - Army Chief
Commander of Sri Lanka Army General Sarath Fonseka has confirmed that the body of V.Prabhakaran, psychopathic leader of world's most barbaric terrorist outfit Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) has been found short while ago (May 19).
According to the defence sources, the LTTE leader who has ordered thousands of Tamil youth to give up their lives for him has tried to save his life until the last moment. The terror chief's body was found by the 53 Division troops led by Major General Kamal Goonarathne, the sources further said.

In the past few days the international media has been full of alleged pictorial evidence, mainly through video footage, of what they claim to be scenes of the "massive humanitarian crisis" said to be occurring in the north of Sri Lanka, where the LTTE is holding thousands of Tamil civilians hostage.
Viewers have been shown harrowing details of alleged bombings of hospitals and of many persons killed and injured, in what are said to be indiscriminate shelling by government forces, in the No Fire Zone. All of such pictorial material is attributed to pro-Tamil pressure groups abroad, especially in the West. Most of these pictures and video clips are also carried on the cyber voice of the LTTE - the Tamil Net. Very rarely are the exact locations and the dates and times when these pictures were obtained stated.
There have been many doubts about the authenticity of these pictures, and the time when they were captured. The news agencies, as well as human rights organizations, and Tamil pressure groups distribute these freely to show the world of the alleged disregard for humanitarian needs of the Tamil civilians held hostage by the LTTE, whose basic human right to freedom has been denied by this terrorist organization.
One of the main sources for this pictorial imagery is the pro-LTTE Tamil Net, which has been consistent in misrepresenting the truth about developments in Sri Lanka, especially about the war against the terrorism of LTTE, and using false pictures to buttress its stories. Recently, Tamil Net carried a news item, using a photograph which claimed to show Tamil civilians fleeing what was said to be nearby artillery fire by the Sri Lanka Armed Forces in the No Fire Zone in Vellamullivaikkal. What was shown as truth was only part of a bigger lie.
We now have the complete picture. It shows how the camera has been made to lie for the benefit of those who are seeking to tarnish the image of Sri Lanka, callously using the suffering Tamil civilians held hostage by the LTTE. What Tamil Net showed, was only part of the real picture, which part is seen below on the left. It shows, people, mainly women fleeing, with some smoke rising in the distance. This is what Tamil Net wanted the public to see.
On the right is the entire picture, in its unedited version; from which the imagery on the right has been edited out. It shows a smiling girl photographing the "fleeing" women. There is a man behind her who seems undisturbed, and a keen observer of the scene, just as the female photographer is. There is a parked white van behind the photographer and the man.
This is how the camera is made to lie, giving the lie to the worn out adage that the camera never lies.
This is just one example of the falsifying imagery used by Tamil Net, often a source of news and pictures for major news channels, and the pro-LTTE pressure groups, to serve their self-fulfilling warnings of an imminent "bloodbath" and "humanitarian catastrophe" in Sri Lanka. Closer examination of the still and video footage put out by these institutions and pressure groups is bound to give much more evidence of how the viewers and policy makers the world over are being misled by such calculated false imagery.

Breaking News :The leader of the Tamil Tigers has been shot dead while trying to flee government troops, according to a Sri Lankan defence official.
Velupillai Prabhakaran, 54, was reportedly trying to escape from the area in an ambulance with two close aides but was ambushed and killed.
"It was confirmed Prabhakaran was killed when trying to flee in an ambulance before dawn," the military source said on condition of anonymity.

Army foils LTTE's last attempt to evacuate its leaders; bodies being identified
Sri Lankan army elites and infantrymen of 53, 58 and 59 Divisions have foiled the LTTE's last attempt to evacuate its top leaders this morning (May 18). According to the latest battlefield reports, soldiers have located over 150 bodies of LTTE cadres so far. The process of identifying the terrorist bodies is in progress.
With this attack LTTE has lost all its key positions and its remnants are now limited to tiny pockets scattered in the Karayamullavaikkal area, the sources said. All army units are now engaged in the final mop up operations.
LTTE terrorists made their final bid to evacuate its leaders early this morning as army elites pierced in to the last remaining LTTE foothold last night. The terrorist have managed took hold of two vehicles and believed to have put their senior leaders into those vehicles before they started moving northwards. According to the available information army elites and 53 Division soldiers have intercepted and crushed the terrorist move after fierce fighting.
Troops have so far identified bodies of Charles Anthony, the eldest son of LTTE chief V.Prabhakaran , B. Nadesan, LTTE's political head, S. Pulidevan , LTTE's head of peace secretariat, S. Ramesh, A special military leader, Kapil Amman, LTTE's deputy intelligence leader, Sudarman , the aide to Prabhakarn's son, Rathnam Master , a black tiger leader and Ilango, another senior LTTE leader.

May 17 - Astronauts from the Atlantis space shuttle try to revive a defective instrument on the Hubble Space Telescope used to discover black holes.
Spacewalking astronauts Michael Massimino and Michael Good floated out on the fourth of five spacewalks to upgrade the world-famous telescope for another five to 10 years of operation.
Atlantis' mission is the fifth and final servicing call to Hubble before the shuttle fleet is retired next year.
Speaking exclusively to Channel 4 News, a key Tamil Tiger leader says his fighters will lay down their arms and begin peace talks - but will not surrender.
In an exclusive interview, Selvarajah Pathmanathan said that the LTTE Tamil Tigers' leader Velupillai Prabhakaran is in the besieged zone with 2,000 Tamil fighters.
He also said -
* he had spoken by phone to Prabakharan for four hours, and the orders to lay down arms came from him
* this is not a surrender - the Tigers are laying down arms to protect 25,000 injured Tamils in the area
* 3,000 civilians have been killed in the area in the last 24 hours
* the doctors who were speaking to the outside world have escaped, but one is injured and another has been arrested and is in a Sri Lankan military camp
* the Tamil Tigers did not fire on civilians or take human shields
